THEATRE AND FREEDOM

20

The publication Theatre and Freedom – The First Decade of Independence of Czech Theatre after 1989 presents the turbulent energy and plurality of aesthetics, themes and activities of Czech independent theatre in the first post-revolutionary decade. It is a critical catalogue that expands on the original material from the exhibition of the same name, which IDU organized to mark the 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution, by including scholarly studies and excerpts from interviews conducted as part of its research with nearly seventy figures from the Czech theatre scene of the 1990s. The individual sections of the publication focus on the development of the conditions and infrastructure for independent theatre and on drama, puppetry and movement theatre of the 1990s, while for the purposes of describing theatrical events during the transition of Czech society from socialist to market, the time frame is also slightly, rarely more, skewed to the period before 1989.
