Ridiculous loves and dislikes of playwright Viktor Dyk
This book study by Prof. Janoušek looks at the changes and constants of Dyk’s poetics. It is based on the fact that most of the plays written by the author are completely unknown to today’s potential readers and stagers, and therefore it wants to bring them closer to the strangeness, even bizarreness, of the way Dyk named life and the world. The key to interpreting his work is the way the playwright treated the motif of love between a man and a woman. Janoušek has succeeded in capturing the movement of Dyk’s dramatic (rather conflicting, because conflict-inducing) work against the background of contemporary events and his personal and inner life.

The Future of Theatre
This volume is the first comprehensive opportunity for Czech readers to encounter the important essayistic and theoretical work of the Swiss stage designer and director Adolphe Appia (1862-1928), whose thinking about theatre fundamentally influenced European theatre in the first half of the twentieth century. The texts in which Appia explores not only the theatrical space, but also the relationship between actor and music, the relationship between music and situation, and the problems of staging the more broadly conceived Wagnerian drama. Appia’s texts have been selected and translated from French by the volume’s editor, Jan Hyvnar, who is also the author of an extensive afterword.

Jana Preková – Joy to the Bone
Jana Preková’s monograph is a representative contribution to the presentation of modern and innovative trends in Czech scenography over the last 40 years. Doc. Jana Preková (1956) has significantly contributed to the progressive transformation of this field. The publication reflects the artist’s most important projects – from her dynamic beginnings in the 1980s through her collaboration with now-established artists in the early days of independent and alternative theatre, Jan Nebesky and Miroslav Bambušek – as well as her interventions in public space, her collaboration with the Prague Quadrennial and her significant teaching activities. Preková was a co-founder of the artistically progressive Atelier of Physical Design at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Brno, and she still works at the Atelier of Scenography at JAMU. She is the holder of the Gold Medal for the best theatre costume (for the balance of artistic creativity of costumes and respect for the actor and the psychology of the theatre character), which she won at the Prague Quadrennial in 1999. In 2015, she curated the Czech exhibition at this show, Sweet/sweet/sweet, dedicated to Jan Nebesky. With her distinctive artistic signature, she has participated in more than 200 productions ranging from independent alternative projects to the stage of the National Theatre.
The publication will be in Czech-English version.

Spaßmacher in the service of the nobility. Theatre in the Czech lands in the second half of the 17th century
After the Thirty Years’ War, the desire for entertainment and laughter brought theatrical performances to the noble houses, in which the comic character Spaßmacher played an important role. The shrewd and often vulgar servant disturbed the plot of these largely moralistic plays with his concerns based on the lowest needs. The book traces the footsteps of the representatives of these comic roles and also follows the movement of professional theatre companies in the Bohemian lands and their presence at the courts of then important families such as the Martinic, Slavat, Bruntálský of Vrba, Eggenberg and Saxe-Lauenburg families.
