Theatre review 1/2021

111,00

Description

The first issue of the thirty-second edition of the Divadelní revue brings mainly contributions that freely combine various forms and directions of exoticism. In the text “Exoticism, Jazz and E. F. Burian’s Musical Theatrical Thought in the 1920s”, ethnomusicologist Zita Skořepová examines the musical exoticism that permeated the newly emerging jazz and “jazz” inspirations in the post-war period and was reflected in Burian’s musical theatrical work and theoretical thinking. Bohemist Jiří Hubáček, in his study “Old Indian Drama on the Czech Stage. Šúdrak’s The Clay Cart at the National Theatre” examines the circumstances of the performance of Šúdrak’s play in Emil Pohl’s peculiar German adaptation at the National Theatre in 1893. The theatre scholar Barbora Příhodová translated and supplemented her 2018 study “Transatlantic Transfers in Opera Stage Design. The Forgotten Work of Richard Rychtarik”, in which she presents the hitherto virtually unknown work of the Czech-American stage designer Richard Rychtarik (1894-1982), who from 1925 worked primarily in the field of opera scenography, including the Metropolitan Opera, in the United States. The topic of exoticism is also included in the complete bibliography of the first lady of Czech Oriental studies, Dana Kalvodová (1928-2003), compiled by Anna Cvrčková and Lenka Chaloupková. Ondřej Sládek’s text “On ‘Reading’ Zich and Structuralism” polemically responds to Jaroslav Etlík’s theoretical essay “Two Traditions in One: Theory as the Experience of Memory”, which appeared in DR 3/2019. Miroslav Dacho’s interview with Slovak theatre historian, critic and translator Sonia Šimková was prepared by Miroslav Dacho, and Pavel Drábek “initiated” several years ago and now reviews the history of American pre-o’neill drama.
